America’s largest conservation organization dedicated to protecting wildlife has honored former Sen. John Warner of Virginia with its National Conservation Achievement Award for his extraordinary environmental leadership in the political and nonprofit sectors. Former Sen. Warner’s award as “Conservationist of the Year” from National Wildlife Federation was announced at the organization’s annual awards banquet in Washington, D.C. last night.

I’m in The Big Easy today to engage in a national dialog on redeveloping brownfields for renewable energy. (Brownfields are parcels of land that have been previously used for industrial purposes). The Environmental Protection Agency, under the leadership of Assistant Administrator Mathy Stanislaus, is doing some exciting things to capitalize on this remarkable opportunity.

On my first day at Wild 9, I found it funny that I had to come all the way to Merida, Mexico to see colleagues from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office in Anchorage and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and to make new contacts with people from Lake Clark National Park and wildlife photographers that have captured Alaska’s amazing landscapes on film to share with the international audience.
