West Virginia Cougar Winter Snow

A West Virginia Mountain Cougar in the winter snow. This Mountain Lion is from the West Virginia Wildlife center just outside Buckhannon WV at French Creek. I did some touch up on the background to give more realism to this wildlife scene.

Otter Sliding Snow Flying

This is an otter sliding down a slope in the snow. It looks like he is really having fun. These animals remind me of a seal. It may be that they are related. Despite their playful nature they more related to a weasel.

Buffalo Feeding Grass Snow

American Buffalo or also called Bison, feeding on old hay in the snow. The animals are huge and no doubt can consume a lot of grass in a days time. These animals roamed the American open fields in enormous herds. However, because of hunting by European-American hunters they almost became extinct.

Wildlife Center Bridge Snowy Pine Tree

Walking in a winter wonderland around the West Virginia wildlife center. My son and I are walking around taking pictures as the snow pours throughout the day. The scenery is so beautiful and peaceful as we look across this foot bridge along the trail at the wildlife center. What a great place to visit and see the animals that are native to West Virginia.

Bobcat Snow White Under Tree

Bobcat stalking from under a pine tree in the midst of the snow on a cold winters day. This particular bobcats coat almost favors that of a Lynx as it blends very well with the snowy forest background. No doubt this helps the predatory cat surprise its prey.

Otter in the Snow Looking Up

An otter looking up at me from the snow covered ground below. He seems to almost pose for an instant while I get this shot of it, and then it is off again running. An otter is a semi aquatic mammal that primarily feeds upon fish and other aquatic shellfish.

Coyote Stalk Winter Snow

This coyote seems to be stalking in the snow as he walks in this direction. Another name for the coyote is the American Jackal. These canines are a mix between primarily their own breed of coyote meaning barking dog, some wolf and a mix of wild dog.

Foot Bridge Winter Snow Ice Pond

A beautiful winter foot bridge across an icy snow covered pond at the West Virginia wildlife center. What a peaceful scene as the water trickles down this stream into the pond you can see the reflection of the bridge in the water.

Fisher Face Snow

A West Virginia fisher standing nearly right in front of me in the cold winter snow. These animals are very cute and cuddly looking but don’t let this deceive you. If you look close enough you can see the fangs in the front of his mouth that are meant for tearing and ripping flesh. These are definitely a predatory animals and their favorite prey include snowshoe hare and porcupine.

Coyotes Running Snow

A pair of coyotes running in the snow together. Although it may be bitterly cold these wild canines have thick fur that is made to withstand the cold. Coyotes usually hunt in pairs and are not only found in remote areas of the wilderness, but are found in metropolitan areas as well.
