Coyote Face Snow

Coyote Face Snow

This coyote has stuck his face down in the snow apparently looking for something. The fur on this wild dog is very thick and full this time of the year. Certainly a coyote’s fur must be thick to keep them warm throughout the winter.

Bobcat Snow Walking

Bobcat Snow Walking

A beautiful grey white and brown bobcat is walking through the snow during a winter snow storm. This is an amazing looking cat especially in the winter snow. These types of cats are fairly elusive and not normally seen in the forest, as they tend to stay away from people as much as possible.

Otter Rocks Snow Winter

Otter Rocks Snow Winter

An otter in the snow near some rocks in the winter. These animals are so playful and seem to really like playing in the snow just like little kids. This is a closer picture than some of the others and there is a little more detail.

Winter Waterfall Ice Snow Rocks

Winter Waterfall Ice Snow Rocks

A winter waterfall deep in a ravine in West Virginia. The water is particularly high right now because of all the snow and rain we have been getting. Although this picture may look peaceful it is anything but quiet right here. The water is very loud but that in itself helps to drown out the noise of everyday concerns and worries. This waterfall is about 25 feet high although it may not look like it from the pictures.

Mountain Lions Winter Forest Snow

Mountain Lions Winter Forest Snow

Two Mountain Lions in the winter forest after a snow storm. These predator cats are obviously very well fed but never the less I would not want to get too close to them during feeding time. There are very few if any documented cases of wild mountain lions in the forests of West Virginia.

Scenic Winter Waterfall Scene

Scenic Winter Waterfall Scene

Standing on the side of this steep hill taking a picture of this roaring waterfall during a winter snow storm in late January. My son and I cleared trees and made our way through to this area during a snow storm so we could see these beautiful waterfalls during the winter snow storm. This is one of the largest waterfalls on this creek which pours into the New River Gorge.

Black Bear Winter Sleep

Black Bear Winter Sleep

Black Bears sleeping next to a tree in a winter snow storm. They are covered with snow and realize that it is better to keep close in order to stay the warmest. These bears have thick coats of fur and a lot of fat to help keep them warm also through harsh cold winter.

West Virginia Cougar Winter Snow

West Virginia Cougar Winter Snow

A large West Virginia cougar laying down next to a rock in the snow. These predatory cats once roamed the Appalachian forests and mountains. They require vast amounts of wilderness for their habitat. With the ever increasing population of the east coast mountainous areas it is becoming less likely that these magnificent wild cats will ever be seen in the wild again…
